Changing Berwyn's Political Profile
Two Important Referendums

One of the funniest political anecdotes in my political archives involves the hysterical and desperate, pants wetting, "life or death" cowardly behavior of the partisan political clique when confronted with the possibility that Berwyn might adopt a non-partisan election format.  That drama will be the topic of an article to appear on this website soon.

However, the purpose  of this page of the website is to give you an opportunity to understand how easy it will be for you to get involved in historic change.
What Is A Referendum?
The "Referendum" is a process by which a political question is submitted on a ballot for which the electorate can vote for or against.

Getting The Referendum Question On The Ballot?
The  process may be slightly different depending on the nature of the question being asked of the voters.  However, every referendum drive has one thing in common:
Petition Drive
Each referendum drive involves obtaining a specific number of signatures on a professionally drafted petition and submitting those petitions through the court system for certification.  Thereafter, the question will appear on the local ballot giving voting residents of the community the option of either accepting or rejecting the proposal.

The Berwyn Resident Independence Coalition.   Why?
BRIC addresses the need for two important changes in local government.
Referendum One:
A Change To Transparent Government
One referendum seeks to replace inherently corrupt political control of your tax dollars with professional transparent independent business management.  This is referred to as an Independent City Manager Referendum or the Council-Manager referendum.

The advantages of Council-Manager government are discussed extensively on the home page.  If the referendum passes, the days of under-the-table and back-room-deals are gone forever.

Referendum Two:
It is referred to as a Non-Partisan Elections Referendum.

There is nothing less  American than having to"declare your allegiance to a party" in order to vote in an election.   This is what partisan primaries are all about.  You have to tell the politicians how you are going to vote before you can vote.  They want to keep track of you.  Your vote is a public record available to all politicians.

Non-partisanship re-focuses elections on the issues rather than affiliation to a political party.  Non-partisanship restores meaning to the idea of privacy in the voting booth and the traditional "secret ballot".
Why Do Politicians Have To Know How You Vote?
What meaningful purpose does it serve to require that you declare allegiance to a political party as a prerequisite to the right to vote.    Click Here for a complete historical explanation for the reason politicians "dreamed up" the requirement that you tell them how you are going to vote.

A Delicate Process
In either case, the process of obtaining the necessary number of signatures is the most challenging aspect of the process.  This is where BRIC comes in.

We have designed an approach which takes the hassle and  hysteria out of the petition process.   Many referendum efforts are poorly designed and poorly executed resulting in confusion and failure.  The most recent effort which was managed by a former mayor and the law firm with whom he associated turned out to be a "train wreck" for a number of reasons we can discuss another time.  We are determined to prevent that from happening again.
